Varadero, one of the most famous beaches in the world and undoubtedly the most popular in Cuba for its fine white sand and crystal clear waters, aspires to be an ecological beach by 2020.
In its 20 km, there are already several facilities that hold this category, which for next year they intend to extend their entirety. A better ordered beach with more information will help to be certified as an environmental area by the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and the CSAM.
This strategy to turn any beach into an environmental destination arose from the strategy drawn up by its authorities after it obtained second place at TripAdvisor's Traveler's Choice 2019 Awards earlier this year. The ranking is of the twenty-five best beaches in the world and based on quantity and quality for twelve months.
According to the entities in charge of tourism in Matanzas, province where the beach is located, it is a priority for their institutions to protect the ecosystem of this area.
At the same time, Varadero intends to expand and improve the quality of its offerings, excursions and services and for this it works to expand the nightlife in this area, extend the hours of shops and restaurants and the route of the buses, among other initiatives that include The construction of a theme park and the Continental Cabaret as well as the opening of 3,000 new rooms distributed in 5-star hotels.
The Famous Beach is located in the Hicacos peninsula, 140 km from Havana. It has more than 21,500 rooms distributed in hotels of which more than 80% are considered as high standard. In 2017 it reached the record of 1.7 million visitors and for 2020 it also holds the first place in the TripAdvisor awards, after being surpassed this year by the Brazilian beach Baia Do Sancho.
