Los Frailes (Friars) Hotel is situated in the former house of Marquis Pedro Pablo Duquesne, a French Navy captain and fourth holder of this nobility title, arriving in Havana in 1763 after King Luis XVI’s death. Los Frailes Hotel, like a perfect place for meditation, takes visitors back to a medieval abbey atmosphere. Monks represented in copper sculptures, religious altarpieces and other details comprise the decoration of this ideal spot for a restful break. Rooms with an exclusive atmosphere, a lobby bar featuring works of art and stained glass windows and a peaceful interior courtyard with a fountain and a well, make this hotel one of the most beautiful buildings in the Historic Center. Every Friday, at nightfall, the hotel employees, wearing costumes like those of Franciscan monks, invite guests to an unusual ceremony at the lobby, where they drink a toast with mass wine. The hotel is located across the Aquarium and very near the Dark Chamber, a peculiar vantage point on top of one of the buildings in the Old Square. Los Marinos and Café Taberna restaurants are on both sides of the street where the hotel is located, serving traditional Cuban and international dishes. A few steps away is St. Francis of Assisi Convent, with a concert hall for choral and chamber music, galleries and the Sacred Art Museum, the only one of its kind in Cuba.
