Itinerary
The pick-up will be at your accommodation in Viñales, we will begin the journey towards Moncada where the Santo Tomás Cave System is located, where we will be provided with a helmet and flashlight to explore one of its levels.The Great Cavern of Santo Tomás is one of the largest cave systems in Latin America and the first in Cuba. It has seven levels distributed in different galleries and routes connected to each other. The cavern never ceases to amaze, not only because of its more than 46 km length, but also because of all the beauty it houses inside. The indigenous artistic manifestations and the fact that the Santo Tomás Cave was formerly one of the most important settlements of the maroons who fled from the sugar cane plantations. They provide the cavern with a magnificent cultural heritage about aspects of Cuba's Indian and black past. The presence of aquifers, the extraordinary formations of stalactites and stalagmites and the strange rocky features result in a place of spectacular beauty, very suitable for practice of caving.Access to the cavern is only allowed through a guided tour of 1 km for 90 minutes. The organizers provide the necessary equipment, which basically consists of a helmet and a flashlight.
